Based on what I can see from the other stuff on Max's blog, I'm gonna guess it's the final fight against the Black Mage himself. But it'll take the form of two separate fights as one - in other words, we'll fight Herr Magnus first, then we'll face off against the Black Mage himself in truest final boss fashion.
I mean, that Black Mage silhouette looks mightily intimidating. Why else would they throw him there out of the blue, and not just throw Magnus into the room?
This is heavily starting to smell like Megaman X. Except I doubt we'll be fighting a normal form of Black Mage and skip straight to his Nitemare form.
Basically, in a nutshell:
Magnus = Velguader
Black Mage = Velguader Sigma
In other words, we'll be skipping a phase of the whole Sigma fight (except it's Maple and the Black Mage) - and from the looks of things, it sounds like one of their devs was spending his night shift playing Megaman X the entire time.
Also, the presence of Mercedes, Evan, and Demon Slayer could signal that their little "grudge matches" didn't quite end up the way they had anticipated (I think mostly because they didn't expect Magnus to come butting in).
or it could be a quest to save Mercedes, freed, and demon slayer? I can see how maplers get a quest from Cygnus to try and go save them. the black Mage, wanting some entertainment, "promised" to release them if the maplers fight against his general Magnus and win. the battle takes place in front of the throne like a sort of arena
Nah. Doubt it. One, the Black Mage is right in front of us - I doubt he'd simply let us go. I mean, after all, we DID murder almost every General in his army. Two, it looks like Mercedes is lookin' kinda, well, dead. She had survived the first encounter, but I imagine her haughty snobbish attitude made her think she was good enough for a second attempt.
Finally, Nexon has put off the confrontation with the Black Mage for far enough. I think some people want an end to it all. With them ending this particular chapter, perhaps they can focus on really rebooting Masteria. Our change is more American, considering there's too many jabs at NA Nexon and American culture that I doubt the Koreans would really get (quite honestly, I feel that Hollywood has the right to sue now, but that's just me and my idiocy). With Black Mage out of the picture, not only do we get some closure to this little ordeal, but we can say for certain that Nexon's got what is probably the biggest plot machine off the production rack and done with.
Of course, I'm but a simple-minded American. What the hell do I know?
And you know how they work.... how? You're not inside their development building, you aren't there when they pump out this stuff. Best you can do is make an educated guess - but even then that's not a 100% guarantee.
Even *I* can't be certain that what I said is true. It's mere speculation. But it's speculation that I crafted based on simple observation of everything that came before this, story-wise.
Here's a list of the Generals and their DoA status.
Von Leon - Deceased
Orchid - Deceased
Lotus - Deceased
Hilla - Deceased
Goire - Deceased
Arkarium - Deceased
Demon Slayer - Replaced by Magnus
Unless of course Goire is a random mob (which we've been told he isn't), then that's 7 Generals. I don't believe Nexon is counting Orchid/Lotus as one person, so therefore Demon Slayer was replaced by a more loyal subject - that subject being Magnus AKA Not a Charged Shot Vile (although I'm gonna reshape that meme and say "Not a Charged Blow!" Magnus).
My post didn't imply in the slightest that i know the inner workings of Nexon. Do any of us?
WOW. I knew that they must've been preparing something big behind the scenes, especially since they haven't really released anything major for a while.
That said, that's incredibly epic. I never thought they'd actually allow us to see the Black Mage himself, but maybe the time really is coming.
Though, there's something I noticed just like everyone else. That's in the past, meaning we don't get to see Black Mage in the present time. I'm wondering where is he now. But if that was actually a real dimension, then killing him in the past would be the final solution to make it so that he wouldn't even exist in the present. Who knows...
Lol, thought about the same too.
The only Black Mage's minion who can make alternate dimensions we know of is Arkarium. But, should we give a progressive sense to the story, then we should consider that, after revealing himself, he was defeated as well by Maplers. Therefore, eventhough he didn't completely die, I doubt he'd gain enough power in time to be able to create ANOTHER fake dimension to confuse us.
So yeah. I doubt it's that. But they'll likely found a similar ploy to make it so that the story doesn't end there and that Black Mage isn't gone.
What I hope is that they WILL allow us to do something real to him, such as sealing him again, even though we wouldn't be able to get rid of him completely, at least not yet.
But again, that place is still in the past. I'm really wondering why do they want to see him in the past. It still definitely looks epic and I'm betting the BGM(s) will be as well. I can't wait to listen to them.
More importantly, I hope they'll follow Corazon's logic for this. It's the most logical way to handle the storyline.
Is this deja vu or did you post that before @Combattente;
Found it.

This meme makes even more sense when you realize that Demon Slayer uses Maces, a Paladin type weapon. And even though he's not a Paladin, he can still charge his powers to knock Magnus senseless.
It also doesn't make sense unless you watch Vile's secret ending in Maverick Hunter X (the PSP remake of Megaman X).
The line I'm talking about starts at 0:50 or so.
(Now that I think about it, I think a Maple parody of this would be awesome. Aran as Zero, DS as X, Magnus as Vile and the Black Mage as Sigma)
.....What?Orchid - Deceased
Lotus - Deceased
Unless something big happens in the Phantom or Mihile storyline quests that I'm unaware of (I seriously doubt they'd kill off Orchid without a boss fight, since she's a central character in the Resistance storyline, which isn't finished yet.), Orchid is still running the Black Wings, and Lotus is unaccounted for.
So chances are, this encounter is going to be us going back in time to help seal the Black Mage, meaning the battle where we (And by "we", I mean the top 1% of the playerbase that can do 99999 with normal attacks and have 50000+ HP without Hyper Body.) defeat the Black Mage will come even later.
no maple char is good enough for zero, period.
but, since you mention dark knight...
sacrifice > lol, self explanatory
no achilles > also self explanatory
virus > DARK knight, aran just aran, dark knight's ain't emo.
hell, even demon slayer is better (WHAT IS HE FIGHTING FORRRRRRRRRRR!?)
aran=very blue
But let's face it - what other Hero NPC would fit better in Zero's shoes? Besides, you guys always try to throw yourself into the spotlight like you deserve it. That's why you or someone like you would rather have yourself get all the glory and fame.
Makes me sick that a good majority of this world has devolved into a place where wealth and fame are considered one and the same, and are highly valued.
Now I'm not saying you, Shinku, would do this (okay, I'm lying in those first sentences - but only because your whole approach to Zero comes off as arrogant and self-entitled, the way I read it) - but why do WE, the Maplers, honestly need to throw ourselves into pre-written, pre-determined parts of the story?
That's kinda why I have mixed feelings about this whole Hero project - allowing anyone to play characters like Aran, Mercedes, Evan, Demon Slayer or even Jett and Phantom somehow gives the players this sense of feeling like THEY deserve to be the ones starring in the video clip sequences.
An MMO that allows you to play ENTIRELY as a living legend in the mainstream gameplay is very screwy - just because it makes singular existences really feel unimportant. Lord knows how many Mercedes or Demon Slayers we have in existence upon Maple.
But what do I know, or even care, for that matter? I can't read the minds of both devs and players. Most I can do is just sit and watch humanity's own disgusting faults go at it. Not like I have any say in the matter.
if you mean simply hero NPC, i'd see aran more as "X" actually, and (as weird as it sounds) freud as zero, mainly because evan is the calculating type (plus dragon with elemental skills yadda yadda)
don't we all want the glory and fame? after all that's what drives the human race, survival, and on a personal level, "to be remembered" only difference is there's those who CAN'T and DON'T WANT to share the spotlight.
wait, i'm confused, the world, or maple world? and what about me? i'm not sure what you're saying about me. (or my approach to zero) but if you check my visitor messages i say even paladins would be better zero's than arans (paladins are always the holy knight who fights for the others, plus elemental attacks)Makes me sick that a good majority of this world has devolved into a place where wealth and fame are considered one and the same, and are highly valued.

so if you don't mind explaining in more detail?
i blame mostly the fact that there's little story between the heroes, you still have to grind, instead of getting into an inmersive story. That's kinda why I have mixed feelings about this whole Hero project - allowing anyone to play characters like Aran, Mercedes, Evan, Demon Slayer or even Jett and Phantom somehow gives the players this sense of feeling like THEY deserve to be the ones starring in the video clip sequences.

if anything, i see the "hero characters" as chapters of a book, you play them to learn how they lived and what they do in the present (in short, makes you aware of the story) and that's it. see how many issues i'm having with evan lore because i never trained an evan? kinda like that.
what's with the sudden insane pessimism? o.oBut what do I know, or even care, for that matter? I can't read the minds of both devs and players. Most I can do is just sit and watch humanity's own disgusting faults go at it. Not like I have any say in the matter.
I'm pinning what hopes I have left on this being a boss..
I don't think it will be "the black mage" perhaps like this..?
The Maplers go back in time via a crack/portal in time temple, this brings them to the post big battle arena (as seen in inkwells) mercedes has just sealed the black mage, draining all her energy leaving her unconscious whilst the others are laying defeated. However the maplers are greeted with Magnus, Demon slayers replacement/perhaps pupil? However unlike Demon Slayer he is totally loyal to the black mage.
Out of rage he challenges the future maplers.
Just please Don't let it be a class!
