Lol suddenly this became a nostalgia thread? haha.

Im my quite honest opinion, Nexon raising the level cap on MS now would be like beating a dead horse with a stick.

    Much like this entire subject.

Personally, I wouldn't want them to consider raising the level cap until there's more high level stuff to actually do. I'm a slow leveler, and it took me years, many exp events, and the new exp curve to get as "far" as I have, so I'm late to a realization that alot of high level players get. My choices for progression have become far more constricted. I have a number of bosses I can fight now, but most of them I can only face once a day. Aside from that, it's LHC and ToT all the way from now unto the end.

Until Nexon manages to fill in that rather wide gap (which used to be even wider before big bang; what was the highest level regular monster, 125?) raising the level cap would just be flat out silly. I'd like to see more enemies with avoidable projectile attacks too. Autohit attacks really annoy me.

Oh yeah, I guess this is also doubling as some sort of nostalgia thread now? Yeah I played in beta. Yeah I remember slaughtering drakes by the thousands to level, people actually using item maker NPCs (thus screws having worth) etc etc. Nothing except Lupins, Taurospears, and the Jr Balrog had any sort of attack aside from walking into you. I was pretty sure the game was going to fail with time, and moved on to some other game called Trickster instead. SUDDEN REVERSAL: I quit Trickster ages ago and am back wasting time on this game. Go figure.

I BELIEVE, now it's been a while so I don't remember for certain, that they didn't at first, until status effects were added. Then they started to be just as annoying Jr.Boogies were back in the day. They would seal, blind, and EXP drain you. Made getting those 20 or whatever ETCs for a quest painfully annoying.

Skeles were 110 and 113. I would take my characters there as soon as they hit 108.

The only reason maple was ever a good game was lack of potential and the community. Potential depends on money, and it makes people more competitive than ever. The community was always slowly declining, beginning with secondary-statless builds, but potential turned that from slowly rolling down a hill to falling off a mountain. If hacked weps, gear and botting were as widespread than as now, or if they made an "old maple" server, the game would be worse off than now.

What made "old maple" feel great was the magic of being new to the game and having a better community. While I'm not saying to forget about it or not to have fond memories, I'm saying that you should get over yourself. BB itself didn't make maple worse, and the game was never challenging, just tedious.

Also, extra levels would just be more wasted time. There's little to do past 160 and nothing to do past 180 other than grind at stronghold, boss or collecting things, so what we need it more 160+ content

So? Anyone who has reached level 200 already clearly enjoys "wasting time", especially when you consider all the useful skills will be maxed much earlier. I mean, once you're dumping SP into something like Rush, Big Bang, Ninja Storm, Illusion Step, etc, you're not really getting a significant boost in strength with each level. Mostly you're leveling for any ranking/achievement purposes, and perhaps the 5 base stats per level, as opposed to the 120-150 era where you're also raising a skill that's either a good passive, buff, or main attacking skill. Granted, going past 200 means no more main base stat (unless that is raised as well), but those who have grinded out 190-200 for the achievement will likely also grind 200-210 for the very same reason if you make 210 the new number.

Anyway, about the community being good or bad or whatever, I think the general age of an MMO has more to do with that than anything else. The first grouping of people who join a game and stay with it (excluding the noobs who jump on the "just released" bandwagon, then declare the game garbage within a week and quit) end up sharing a lot of information amongst themselves as they explore uncharted territory. There are all sorts of shared experiences and stories of conquering challenges for which there is no guide, some of which may actually take a few intelligent people to figure out.

But once that's all fleshed out, you end up with a bunch of identical looking guides saying where to train, how to build your character, and any other hand-holding that could be put into text. Soon after, you end up with a game where pretty much everyone has gone through the exact same experiences by following exactly what the guide tells you to (or complaining and being told they're doing it wrong because they strayed from that path). Also, this invites any idiot with a 3rd grade reading level and a keyboard into the same areas and content that everyone else is trying to make use of, whereas before the guides, those idiots probably would not have found their way to that spot. Then you also get the whole elites vs new players battles and people getting bored and complaining the game is dying regardless of whether it is or not *coughHiMapleCommunitycough*, and everything just rolls downhill.

As a final word, I'm not saying guides are bad in any sense. Shoot, I still have a .html save of a Priest/Saint guide I made for a game (that is no longer in operation), and that thing is thousands and thousands of words, plus animated .gifs of each active skill. Good players and good communities want information too, you know. But that was a real comprehensive view of the entire class, rather than just "The idiot's guide to a 200 Demon Slayer", which features one straightforward build and like, 10 total training spots from 1-200.

ITT: People not understanding the difference between "hard" and "tedious."

If I told you I would give you a million dollars if you could play Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto within a year (assuming you had never played the piano before) and you decided to do it, that would be hard.

If I told you I would give you a million dollars if you enumerated all the permutations of the numbers 1 through 1000 on paper by hand, and you decided to do it, that would just be tedious. Also probably impossible.

  18. Default Re: Nexon Needs To Raise The Level Cap

Hah, that's a bit farfetched on the examples.

I would simply say this about the skill level of Maple Story. If you took the average Farmville player, one who has never actually played an MMO before but gets the RPG concept, and gave them a high level character and basic instructions on how to kill monsters, within a day's worth of serious practice they could be training that character about as well as the person who poured a hundred hours into leveling it. However, if you took that same person and tried to teach them to play something like a Call of Duty game, it could take them weeks of training to actually get "good" at it. That's because Maple Story gameplay is very easy to figure out and execute, whereas a shooter game requires precise timing and execution if you want to succeed.

On the flip side, you could be the most accuate star-throwing Assassin in Maple Story history. Never throw the wrong way, never miss a flash jump timing, etc, etc. But you're still going to have to put a huge amount of time into the game if you want to be a level 200 Night Lord. With a new Call of Duty game, if you've played the previous versions enough, there's no need for you to grind out easy mode for a bunch of hours. You can set it straight into a hard difficulty and beat it the night the game hits store shelves. It may take you a little time to learn the new maps and adjust to any new changes, but if you have the skills already, you can still blaze through it and beat the game very quickly.
