It is cheap, yes. I don't mind them so much in video games since I can just start over and things like save points exist (Like seriously, Dragon Quest is not a game you should play if you loathe instant death) but they're a pain in MMOs since lag can get you killed. Hence why my Bowmaster has never seen Zakum in its glory days.
There's not really any insta-death in DQ though...
Except for the two spells Beat and Defeat (or whatever they're called now), which is a chance and not guaranteed, you rarely face situations in which there's absolutely nothing you can do about getting instantly killed, unless the point was to be instantly killed (Like in DQ5 at the end of the first Act). In most situations you're either not prepared, or you could have done a lot to stop a wipeout, especially one that occurs in a single turn.
Beat and Defeat are the exceptions, and I'm not a big fan of them either (Nostalgia moment, if you know it: Cristo in DW4).
Plus being wiped out doesn't really mean much if you've been playing correctly, either. You don't lose Experience, and even at the 1% you lose at bosses in MS, at high levels that's a lot. You lose half your Gold, but if you've been playing correctly, most of your Gold is in the bank anyway. Plus, in MS, you can die multiple times in a row, within a few minutes. You can walk back into the map and instantly die again because while you were loading, some map AOE spell went off and 1-hit everyone again.
It's just a bad concept, and MS makes it 100x worse than games like DQ do.
I don't like it when they make it so damn high damage people can't boss at all. Unless they pt...? I'd rather it be such that it's fast paced, fine, but not at the mercy of lag. Also, I'd rather it be high enough damage to kill most, but if you gear correctly you'll be fine e.g. sacrifice some %stat for %hp? Or simply party.
Or have interesting mechanics so that it deals 60% of your max HP, for example, so that everyone suffers equally. I don't like 1/1 btw.

Does anyone else find the whole concept of a boss that burrows, rises, then burrows again as soon as it takes hits to be annoying?
that'd be extremely unbalanced for warriors though, and classes with achilles-like skills though. just look at aswan.
edit: just noticed, the chicken boss actually throws TWO timefields, one goes forward and the other goes backwards, in the video he only stood on the forward ones, i wonder what will happen if he stands in the other one, timestop? the clock recharges?
I just know fighting Belum will annoy the hell out of me, going into the ground so often like that.
Oh no no, I either had amazing bad luck or those spells tended to wipe me out before I had a chance to find sufficient protection (It's still Beat and Defeat by the way). That's what I meant though; DQ may had a rather high experience curve in more than one way but there were lots of measures you could take to make deaths less annoying while that's mostly impossible in Maple Story, while my Phantom has managed to get killed more than once even with Final Feint from going to Aswan and getting caught in the tower blast because of a slight lag spike.
My main issue with MS doing this mainly is that you could have all the skill and just one bit of lag would be enough to undo all of your efforts.
Kind of sad there isn't any expansion on the areas before the boss rooms, and wow that worm hell no stop moving so much and it'd be great but in and out ever other second helllllllll no.
The worm thing should be more like this (4:07-6:04)
