So gonna give the game a whirl this weekend. Which of the starting offered Champions are newbie friendly? I don't want to accidentally pick a Champion who can barely handle creep on their own, or gets raped in 10 seconds flat because they see me as a huge threat.
Miss Fortune isn't too bad (gun/ranged)
Veigar isn't all that difficult either (Magic/ranged)
Alistar's not too difficult to get into (Tank/close range)
First do the tutorials they're very helpful and you get to try 3 characters if you do battle tutorial 3 times.
This free week's easy chars would be Master Yi and Miss Fortune since they're both AD and don't need much skill. If you want a more skill focused champion (as in mage) you can try Veigar or the close range mage resource free Rumble. The other char that's free is the monkey king which you wanted to try, he's AD too but includes more skill than Yi and more trickery.
You can see this week's champion rotation (and click on 'em for details) here:

Hmm, wait. Does that mean if I were to download LoL now and check out the free Champions, does that mean I could grab them and play them forever, or it's more like a free trial of the characters?
Free trial. they change it every week on mondays usually iirc
Yi is pretty good to show AD/Carry/Melee champs, its pretty straightfoward and pomegranate.
@IllegallySane: I would maybe start with Ashe. She's very simple to use, especially for a beginner like you.
Edit: Damn she's not free this week. But anyways, Ashe is free usually every other week, just a fyi
Also, when ryze becomes free, he's pretty straightforward to use.
You have 10 free champions every week, they rotate on mondays/tuesdays. You can buy the ones you like the most with IP or RP (game currency and paid points respectively). On average games on main map summoner rift give around 70 IP I guess, and first win of the day has 150 IP bonus. Champions cost 450, 1350, 3150, 4800 or 6300 IP. Best champs to buy for 450 IMO are Ashe for ranged DPS, Annie or Ryze for Mage, and Nunu for a tanky mage.
Edit: oh and as someone else mentioned, liking riot on facebook and youtube will get you tristana (ranged dps) and alistar (tanky support).
He's good on how to play a mage but I think he's a particular case because of his mana scaling isntead of AP
Learn tanky dps. All you do is farm for 20 minutes and kill their carry in a fight. It's really easy :)
Why do I see so many Singed players rolling with Cleanse?

IllegallySane, just play two or three games and then buy Ashe.
