State of Emergency

My home was hit by a flash flood this morning around 2 AM, my car and my entire lower level are under 3 to 4 feet of water right now. I escaped safely with my pets, however I am now temporarily without transportation or shelter.

My access to Southperry will obviously be somewhat limited while I try to get things in order. I've been camped in my corporate office since 4 am trying to get things straightened out and prioritized.

Anyone feeling charitable can feel free to make a donation via the Market.

I will keep this thread updated as I know more. I think there'll be a news report interviewing me online after 8 am for anyone who wants to laugh at me soaked in my jammies answering some of the stupidest questions that only a local newsman can ask during a disaster.

Cats have been returned to the apartment. They're locked upstairs in the bedroom with food & water and a litter pan. Not ideal but it's better than leaving them locked in a carrier in a strange place with other unfamiliar cats.

Wow, I really hope the damage isn't too great. I felt really unlucky when my laptop HDD committed suicide, but that pales in comparison to this =/

Full coverage on the car, but if it's totaled that's just blue book replacement value and having to find a new one.
Renter's insurance, but probably doesn't cover floods, since most flood insurance is completely separate and I can't get to my documentation to verify.

The biggest issue is being temporarily homeless, since the entire downstairs is devastated.

I pored through Louisiana state law to find anything about renter's insurance and flooding. I figured there had to be stuff added in the past few years due to Katrina. This was the only section I could find.

Rental insurance will cover lost possessions, but it will take up to three days before they come look and form an estimate for what they'll pay (minus $500.00 deductible of course).

It may also take up to three days to get the car looked at. Retail price of my car at this time is ~10K but no idea what their replacement value will be or if they'll try to repair it. Thankfully I do have comprehensive coverage, another $250.00 deductible there though.

Besides your possessions in the lower level is there anything that would have lasting damage? Like walls breaking down, mold, etc. Or did you just get out of there without taking a look?

There was no power in the surrounding several blocks so it was impossible to tell. I was wading through it carrying two pet carriers and my laptop.

It's bound to completely screwed though, since the entire interior was flooded. The carpet's ruined, the drywall is soaked through, the linoleum can't really handle immersion either, the appliances are doubtlessly toasted. My entire server rack is gone, (bye bye SPDB) and my shiny new couch floated by as I opened the door...

Not that I can think of. Google ads is only profitable in extremely large volumes and click fraud is a crime that'd result in both the abuser and myself being kicked out of the program. The Amazon link is the next best thing. Replacing your search engine with the southperry version of SwagBucks might earn a bit, but that'd be almost as slow & incremental as the Google Ads. Could add a ClickBank affiliate link as well, that's essentially similar to the amazon affiliation but with downloadable content. Nothing that lets you easily donate without spending though.

Whenever I have a chance to settle down I'll do what I can in order to help.

I was asleep. They woke me up knocking to evac. Found out why when I got downstairs and waded into my living room. Immediately grabbed my water shoes and the laptop that was above water. Confirmed I was alive and wld evac. Went upstairs. Called for a ride and coordinated what high ground to pick me up on while I packed clothes and kitties. If the cat food and litter hadn't flooded I would've left them upstairs but with no food or litter they had to come too. One carrier each plus my suitcase.
Unplugged everything before leaving even tho power was off and most of it was already doomed. This was 2 am. Took until 3 to get fully packed and make it to high ground. Then I unpacked the cats showered and rode to work at 4 am to begin filing insurance claims and notifying people what was going on.

Wow. Out of all pictures you posted on flickr, the one with the server racks is just super saddening. Feel your pain bro, I went through a flood like 10 years ago and it's one of my worst memories.

Ouch. Well, no one died, so everything is replaceable. I remember when my house flooded. We barely were able to get all the more valuable replaceables out (family photos, etc.). I remember my cousins in Tennessee who got blasted with a flood and they couldn't go into their house until 1-2 weeks until the waters receded.

I am truly sorry for your lost. :(

If I have learned anything from watching King of the hill, its that one of your new worries could be mold. It seemed to be a problem even in unflooded buildings. I dont remember how they solved the problem though..

And to make it greater I have to have my apartment emptied by Sunday and find a place to put everything. Was planning to have it cleaned out already but didn't expect to have the second floor empty too and now I'm back to trying to find someone to take the cats again. Sigh. Busy weekend.

No. That wouldn't be legal anyway since I can't insure their property. Their insurance covered that. I am supposed to get my security deposit back from them today and contact fema because we were declared a catastrophe last night. Not sure that will do any good but will give it a shot.

While I'm very sorry for what happened to you Eos, I'm far more concerned about the reported near 400 tornadoes that were spawned by the storm that have caused a so far reported 300 deaths, which were a result from the same storm that caused your flooding. :c

When the tsunami struck Indonesia several years back... so many of the volunteers ended up needing help themselves, because they couldn't take it anymore. In such situations, there really isn't anything more you could do for the dead except give them a quick mass burial, because getting more living people out and taking care of them is much more important than grieving for them. The grief can come later. Now... let's get things done.

It's really just unfortunate how things have to be.

There really are no words to describe how sorry I am for your loss. Rebuilding anything you've put hard work into is never an easy thing, physically, emotionally or otherwise. I wish I had the money to somehow help you out, but I'm rather in a tough spot myself these days. I do hope for you to recover as fast and effortlessly as possible though. And although the wreckage is unbearable to even interpret, at least your cats and yourself are all unharmed.
