Server Migration & Forum Porting

Southperry is very old by technology standards.
It's had to move servers multiple times in it's life but its more or less always lived in a heavily modified vBulletin that's now decades out of date and bled security issues like a Wizet game.

So for this year's anniversary of my ownership I had to choose between mothballing it for good, or moving it to something modern and stable and letting it lose a lot of the features and functionality that are frankly moot at this point anyway.

Since you're reading this instead of a couldn't be reached message, I obviously opted for the latter.

It's mostly here. It's familiar if not quite identical. There are probably some quirks I've missed from the porting that just as likely don't matter that much to the four people who will wander through looking for nostalgia.

Server Relocated

We've relocated to a new host that provides us about 4x the resources for 1/8th the cost, yay capitalism.

Some functionality has not been turned back on yet while I try to determine if everything has successfully copied over.

[COMPLETE] Imminently Impending Service Interruption

We're being moved to a new node in our host due to the nightly disruptions we've been having this past week.

This will give us better space and positioning but also means our IPs will be changing again so brief interruption while those propagate across the interwebs.

Our host is moving us to a different ISP due to an ISP level spam blacklisting that resulting in our earlier email interruption.

I am in the process of setting up our new IP address but there may be few hiccups during the week as everything adjusts to the change.

Email Issues

Note that we are currently experiencing an email interruption due to an overzealous upstream Spam blocking service having blacklisted the entire 192.3.*.* IP range.

Our host is working to resolve this, but if it can not be done in a reasonable and timely manner we may a short outage while we are moved to a different address space.

Or worst case, we may have a more-than-brief outage while we move to a different host, again. Should be ample notice of that before hand though.

For those who don't know, not only is July 4th the American Independence Day, but also the marks the day Fiel stepped down, and today in particular marks the point at which I've been at the helm of Southperry twice as long as Fiel was.

Advertising Changes

In an ongoing attempt to reverse our ad revenue decline and keep us in the green the following changes have been implemented;

Completely given up on Project Wonderful. Those ads have been replaced by AdSense.
The third adsense ad at the bottom of pages has been removed
A new ad slot has been added to the left hand of each page, excepting the Portal/Home.
Our adsense categories have been restacked to try to keep the ads more relevant.

With the advent of the "+1" system a "me too"/"i agree" post with no purpose or further elaboration of it's own in a discussion thread would also be considered spam as would "reaction" images.

Of late there have been far too many otherwise good people getting infracted for this. Please remember to not just post a reaction image. It's fine if you're responding to one post or one part of a post with a reaction image and then responding to a different post or continuing to respond to another part of a post. Reaction images by themselves are spam.

Indeterminite Impending Downtime Wednesday Night

Some of you using Ad Blocker Plus may be surprised to suddenly be seeing ads;

This isn't an error, this is because you have "Allow some non-intrusive advertising" enabled and we are currently partnering with PageFair to provide advertising that meets those criteria to anyone blocking our existing ads by not white-listing us.

Additionally, many of you have no doubt noticed the new location of the upper most ad, which, while being more conspicuous, is less rearranging of the overall page than the previous location was, as it no longer shoves contents downward.

Also this prime spot is currently through a different company than Google, one that is more video game specific and oriented, in hopes that what they have to advertise will be relevant and interesting to more of you who see them, although they do fall back on Google when they've run out of their own stuff to show. They're still onboarding accounts so the ratio between new stuff and google stuff will be shifting towards "new" I hope.

Lastly, we've also seeded our existing ads with more Amazon content. We get nothing for displaying them, but if they interest you enough to follow one and purchase stuff we get a portion of that, just as if you were to follow the Amazon link topside.
