Well, the previous ones (at least in the modern series) haven't been that tragic.

Donna simply got her memories erased

I don't think a long-term companion has died since... the 4th doctor or something.
Unless you count River Song.
or Rory, about 5 times.

If a companion were to die, it would be under Moffat's reign, i just know it.

I can't help noticing the new companion's hairstyle is very similar to Amy's. Wonder how different she'll look in the actual episodes.

Holy crap. The new companion is a Dalek and I love her already. She's amazing. I knew the "How did she get the milk?" question would be important eventually. The Amy and Rory scenes were pretty sad, it's gonna be tough to see them go. But from what I've seen of the new companion and the actress playing her... I think I'll manage.

She wasn't supposed to appear until the christmas special apparently, so her showing up in this episode was a massive surprise, in a similar vein to Rose appearing at the start of Donna's run.

I liked that dalek scene, but then they decided to build the whole reveal on a bad pun.
Interesting how the episode ends with the same question that the last series ended with. Is this something that they're going to pursue this series?

And you know what those dalek zombies means? All those "dalek girl" cosplays are now canon.
