which character is worth focusing on in the long run?

out of a 51 hunter, a 42 aran and a 39 brawler. i plan on getting the aran to 50 at least for the ring, the hunter also has a zhelm (16/16/15/15) + broken glasses that im more than willing to SoK. so if i plan on investing a sizable amount of time on one, which should i go for?

If you level incredibly slow>>>>Brawler.

If you level somewhat slow>>>>Aran.

If you level fast>>>>Hunter.

Play one in accordance with your style, and not so much with whatever else. I've played every class in this entire game, excluding "Evan". I can say with certainty that I enjoy Night Lords, Night Walkers, Hermits, Assassins, and Rogues a lot more than I would for any other classes.

BMs tend to have lower HP, easier to die on. But once you have enough HP, they are wanted for boss runs and such. I don't have a high level brawler or aran. But I know a friend who thinks his brawler's got too little HP and requires too much attention while grinding.

If they don't have the time, understandable. Still, pick the class that they think suits their needs and personality. Simple.
