Quite frankly there should be no competition.
UT gets my vote. Also, UT2k4>UT3.
UT I feel is more for old-school hardcore players. TF2 is just plain fun, silly, and pretty chill, which fulfills my requirements.
TF2 is fun, but Unreal Tournament 2004 beats it hands down simply because of how many gamemodes there are and the fun as pineapple singleplayer campaign
TF2 hands down. The classes give the game a variety that few others can achieve. Not to mention the new weapons being shipped from time to time.
Btw, "Unreal Tournament" is supposed to be specifically the first game from 1999. Not the whole franchise or any of the sequels.
Between old and hats, I'll take old. I played UT on LAN during class a lot in high school/college during labs though, so maybe that's why I prefer it.
TF2 - October 2007
Unreal Tournament 3 - November 2007.
Interesting, isn't it?
Also, I prefer tf2 because it's one of the few FPS where aim isn't as important as knowing what to do and when. As a medic, choosing who to heal... As a spy, making the rest think you are one of the other team... while STILL having the aim factor, for sniper, for example. Traps? Demoman. Specific targets? Scout. There's a lot more behind the hats.
I find it amusing you pretty much sum up TF2 as "hats". I put 167 hours into TF2 as of now and I've yet to own a hat that came from a Mann crate; yet, I don't care about such things. I can laugh and have a fun time even when I lose and/or die repeatedly, and when a game can do that it's a keeper.
