Koolk was arrested!!

Somehow I don't think Nexon's concern in this matter was broken friendships <_<
IMO, what Nexon does is protecting their profit margin, by eliminating competitions. What they're doing is what I see as a bully tactic, and I dont think it will work. Other companies tried it, and private servers are still being operating.

What Blizzard does is that they chose to put more efforts into WoW by trying to make the game better with contents and moderations etc. Nexon can shoot down all possible threats but it doesnt make them a better company if they cant change the way they run things. Better off put those resources and efforts into customer services and game management where we players feel more comfortable and more inclined to stay on their server. Otherwise, when another game comes out that has similar attraction, many going to leave, and they'll be forced to pick up their pace. The introduction of private servers demonstrated this.

Nexon is slowly but surely getting better. The last few patches have been.. well amazing. I really don't see how you're saying Nexon is being a bully. They just want to protect their intellectual property.

Well, you may say they're protecting their properties, but why protecting their properties when they could protect their consumers?

By making the game better, reducing the number of disatisfactions, resolving matters in a nice and orderly manner, etc, they're going a long way in keeping customers. Trends shown that fighting against private servers goes nowhere. Other bigger companies tried it. Why would Nexon be an exception?

The last few patches is anything but amazing. People get banned left and right. Needless to say, it's frustrating for them. Also, there're other issues, which I cant be bothered listing, but it's far from "amazing". On top of that, dealing with the customer service department is well.....

I'll say it again, they've only starting to pick up their pace at around the time where private servers starting to surface. Who knows which deep and dark era we're still in if those servers didnt exist.
Afrobean Wrote:Recall that this the same situation the music industry faced when mp3 downloads first hit it big. Clearly the industry was taking a hit from it, but how could a company calculate exactly how much money they lost directly as a result of a single person or group illegally giving away their music? Surely not everyone who downloaded the song would have bought it otherwise.

Its similar but not strictly the same. Nexon seem to be approaching these cases by arguing lost revenue from Cash Shop items. If your private server has nothing in there that is obtained via any cash shop means (including things such as Onyx Apples) then as soon as their lawyer argues you are losing them income, you could argue back that you are providing the EXACT same service they advertise for free.

I'm not saying this is right, just curious about the implications.
On top of what Loddlaen said, cash shop items has catches, that is you need a character to buy/wear it obviously. If you dont have a character on their server in the first place, they they're not losing any income from that.

Then Nexon could argue that without private servers, that player WOULD HAVE played on their server.

But, BUT, to play on their server, it's free. They advertised it that way. No need to pay, it's free and because we can. However, that's the same with playing on a private server. It's still free. You dont have to pay anything.

Nexon used the argument that we buy NX POINTS, and thus it's not refundable, and however we choose spent with those NX points are up to us. We're not oblige to buy the points, so how are they saying they're losing money on cash shop items otherwise? What is the difference between a player playing on a private server and one playing on GMS say?? (ignoring all these copyright issues). Absolutely nothing. Someone joining GMS doesnt mean they have to buy NX. That was how Nexon advertised it.

On the other hand, the music industry or WoW on the other hand requires registration, thus if you dont pay, you cant play. There is a tangible loss right there. They can show a direct relationship to membership/item bought = revenue. Nexon cannot.

Not exactly. On GMS, it's almost impossible to become really strong without any NX. Not impossible, but pretty hard.

On a PS, it's extremely easy to be super strong with no money at all. So people that would have spent money on AP resets/2X exp or drop/marriage/gacha just play on a PS, which does make them lose money.

I'd normally not bother doing this, but I feel I have to point this out. In GMS, can you obtain cash items without NX Trade or buying them via NXCash? The answer is no. Can you on private servers? The answer is very yes.

You're not obliged, but think for a second. What are the odds of you buying NXCash on GMS? Greater than one. What are the odds of you buying NX from Nexon on a private server? Zero. Private servers offer the exact same service as Nexon, with all the benefits and none of the cost. How is that not losing them business?

Let's say you recorded an album. You give the album out for free, but you charge money for additional bonus tracks you record. Someone takes the bonuses tracks, and your album, and distributes them for free. Whether you choose to accept it or not, you lose revenue from the people distributing your work for free. Someone who may have bought the bonus tracks no longer have reason to. After all, they get the exact same content for 100% less of the cost.

Much like you don't need NX to enjoy Maple Story, you don't need the bonus tracks to enjoy the Album. However, the bonus tracks, like NX, raise revenue to enable you (Nexon) to keep providing your fans (users) with free content.

And yet, to gain "respect online", they lose alot in life. Personal record on them about this, was it really worth it all? Smart? Right...

Again, Libre versus Gratis.

Free of cost does not equal a free license to modify or distribute or any such thing. Yes, they provide the client gratis, but that doesn't mean you have libre to copy their service without their permission.

Cash shop is completely irrelevant in the matter anyway. When you buy things in the cash shop, you don't pay dollars for them anyway. You spend in game currency for them. Yes, there is a distinction of this ingame currency in that it can only be obtained by giving Nexon dollars, but that doesn't mean that the ingame currency has liquidity. You give Nexon dollars and they add ingame currency to your account, but this ingame currency has no monetary value. Just because you pay dollars for something doesn't mean the law is on your side if you want to change it back, PARTICULARLY when the "thing" in question is nothing but variables in a database on a company's server.

Their argument of lost income is on the same grounds that the music industry made claims of lost income. By creating an unlicensed, pirate source of competition, the "rogues", as it were, are able to detract notice away from the official product, and in doing so, are able to negatively impact the company's income. I'm not sure what methods they have for calculating the exact effect (particularly in the case of the player who got it in an unofficial server, but wouldn't have paid for it in the real one), but that aside, their stance is a valid one.

And finally note that it doesn't matter if a person is not obligated to pay Nexon to play on the official server. Again, the difference of gratis versus libre comes up. They make the game free to download, free to play. But that doesn't mean that you are free to do with it as you please. By creating a competing service, they are able to draw away POTENTIAL customers, and in doing so, they are DEFINITELY affecting Nexon's income. What you are suggesting is like trying to tell someone that Limewire doesn't contribute to the music and film industries bringing in less money. Yes, there will be individuals who would simply not download at all and are only doing it because it's free, but then there are other individuals who, if given no free, illegal alternative, WOULD spend money on it. It doesn't matter if you believe this or not, or whether Nexon can even conclusively prove that the case is true with them. The simple fact is that they do not like the unlicensed pirate server creating an unofficial source of competition, and they believe it to be hurting their income. However, even if it was not hurting their income, EVEN IF IT WAS HELPING IT, they have every right to bring legal action.

That's customer service problems, not patch content problems. The content made available by the patches has been good lately, and likely will continue to be good for a while to come, as Pirates, Monster book, Masteria expansion, and Magatia aren't too far away.

Okay, being strong on a PS has no direct relation to Nexon's server. Copyright issue aside, which I am not discussing about as Afrobean is addressing this, I am not disagreeing that you need NX for certain classes to wash to be able to HT, itcg to be able to get better gears, gach to get good scrolls/money etc, but Nexon stated that YOU DO NOT HAVE TO use those services, the game is free to play (albeit pay to enjoy).

I am one of many whom hates anyone saying "if you dont like how Nexon treats their customers, quit, it's free to play". They sneakily make things more convenience for you if you have cash shop items. Pet, auto pot, resets, slot expansions, 2x cards etc. Those are there, and like it or not, they will improve your game play if you pay for them.

NX on private servers and NX on Nexon's servers are nothing related. You cannot transfer things from a private server to the main server. To say that one can get free NX points on a private server does not imply one will buy NX on the live server.

Even tho you're highly likely to buy NX on the live server does not stands as an absolute case for losing money. Nexon has made it somewhat necessary to obtain NX to play the game, but they will not admit it, and in fact, they advertised otherwise. Because of that, at the very best they can claim is a potential loss of income. There is no way they can say for certain that they've lost incomes due to private servers.
