Edit: In spite of the number being incorrect:
Quote:Radiation in the water was a still worrying 100,000 times higher than normal, rather than 10 million times higher as originally stated, Muto said.

Still more than high enough to be a concern.

Someone said they were false readings.

> Background dose (one average person per normal day): 10 microsieverts
> 10 million times that much: 100 sieverts. (a)
>> 10 minutes after Chernobyl explosion + meltdown, standing RIGHT next to the reactor core: 50 sieverts. (b)
Wut.

Just so we can avoid a step, here's a source to confirm what Satellite and Shidoshi said.
EDIT: Oops? o_o guess it confirms the 10m-times?

Still a very high number regardless.
And sorry for missing this. It looks like this news is only an hour or two new.

That's about 1 sievert per day; in other words, each worker will have at most 6 hours of work in such exposure before he has to be forced to leave the scene. Pretty severe.
Nevermind,
Quote:A spokesman for Japan's nuclear watchdog, Hidehiko Nishiyama, said the level of radiation in puddles near reactor 2 was confirmed at 1,000 millisieverts an hour.
pomegranate just got real.

Considering the fact that is is 250msv per year, only 6 hours before the worker would need to leave the scene for a year. So yes, severe.
That is unless they allow more for one year (standard was 50msv max in one year as long as the average of 5 years was 20msv), but even 2.5x 250msv is not going to give the workers a lot of room to work.
Edit: source?

Just above you.

I suppose it was wrong to assume that source just had the same information as the source I found.
Found one myself anyway.

At least for myself, I don't know how many times higher than normal radiation has to be till it's actually dangerous. It could be like 5,000 times above normal that would still be nothing. 100 000 times above normal just sounds scary enough.
Not saying that it isn't dangerous amount of radiation. Just that it would seem like a smaller amount of radiation for people who know about this stuff.

About 30 times normal is dangerous - iff you're exposed to it for an entire year of 30x normal.
Taking off from that, about 250,000 times normal is dangerous - if you're exposed to it for one whole hour.
If you did see a radiation meter jump to 100,000+ times normal, you should probably be moving very quickly away from it, and you'll be fine.

To add onto Stereo's figures, this sudden spike in radiation was believed to be due to radionuclides with short half-lives that rapidly decayed in a short amount of time. If this is true, there shouldn't be any long term damage to the environment, even though the radiation level is quite daunting (you start to die atte 2 hours of exposure).

Just for clearance, Tokyo has still a radiation level which is lower than Oslo, Norway. Which is like, the other side of the world.
