Chavez says capitalism may have ended life on Mars

CARACAS (Reuters) - Capitalism may be to blame for the lack of life on the planet Mars, Venezuela's socialist President Hugo Chavez said on Tuesday.

"I have always said, heard, that it would not be strange that there had been civilization on Mars, but maybe capitalism arrived there, imperialism arrived and finished off the planet," Chavez said in speech to mark World Water Day.

Chavez, who also holds capitalism responsible for many of the world's problems, warned that water supplies on Earth were drying up.

"Careful! Here on planet Earth where hundreds of years ago or less there were great forests, now there are deserts. Where there were rivers, there are deserts," Chavez said, sipping from a glass of water.

He added that the West's attacks on Libya were about water and oil reserves.

Earlier this month, the U.S. National Research Council recommended that NASA's top priority should be a robot to help determine whether Mars ever supported life and offer insight on its geological and climatic history.

It would also be the first step in an effort to get samples from Mars back to Earth.

A NASA team recently tested a space suit in a setting with extreme conditions akin to some of those found on Mars -- an Argentine base in Antarctica -- for possible use on a visit to the Red Planet.

If you do have the full transcript of what he said to show that it was out of context, I would be interested in seeing it.

Either way,I think we should probably prove that intelligent life existed on Marse long before we speculate on how it would have been destroyed.

I also have to point out this asinine comment:

Such things happen all the time without human intervention. Many lakes and rivers have dried up long before man.

Also, the last theory I heard on how Mars has such a weak atmosphere and no liquid water is apparently because it's core froze. With the core frozen, it could no longer produce a magnetic field to protect the planet from solar radiation and the waves of solar winds slowly chipped away at the atmosphere and liquid water.

Mars, like any other planet, is a complicated subject. We are still learning things about our own planet so it is hard to determine what happened to another planet. Until we actually send people to mars, it will just be more of the same. It will be very slow going in getting any signifigant information about the planets past. There are several theories about what happened to mars, but the fact is that we really dont know.

Personaly, I think there was intelligent life on mars at one time.

He does realize Capitalism STARTS a civilization? He knows that without a desire for goods and services most interaction of humans would be little beyond social interaction (which for a primitive species is low priority) and the need to satisfy personal needs along with personal desires started the trade system in which we operate to this damn day and without specialization of specific talent and using that talent for trading most if not ALL species interaction would be non-existent (E.G. if my family doesn't need a spear that someone else can make, why the hell do I need to interact with another guy who makes spears).

Don't get me wrong I'm well aware of the flaws of a PURE capitalistic society (which is why they no longer exist in great numbers, most countries have a mixed economy) but this is bull sh*t.

Anyway, I'm quite certain we all agree. Regardless of our opinions on capitalism, Chavez is an idiot for making this absurd statement.
