Gender and Language

I have an exam in 4 days, and I need some readings or examples on 2 topics: Gender and Language and Language and its place in the society. Basically, the first one is about how people of different genders speak differently, i.e. guys swear more and girls are more polite, etc. I guess the second one doesn't need much explanation.

Anyone know of any online articles where I can get some examples or insights from? Help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I dont know any article, but one thing to know, is that every thing can fall into context. Girls may be polite, but they themselves will become like a male and swear a lot when around a group of males. The same can be said about a male, when confronted with a group of girls, they can become caring as well.

Language has a large part in society. It connects us and differentiates us from one group to another. It allows us to convey what we feel and what we wish as well as what others feel and wish as well.

In some languages, girls and guys have very distinctly different forms of speech, and they may also address people differently according to the gender of the speaker and the person who they speak to, for example in Korean, they address their older siblings with different vocabularies, the same goes for Spainish, and if I remember correctly, some parts of the verb are different. This sounds like a strand of socio-linguistics? I don't have any sources for you online, I do have a book as I once studied the subject...years ago... it's a very interesting subject. What I suggest you do though, is to type your keywords into Google Scholar and see what you can get out of it.
