WayOfTime Wrote:What are these AP exams, exactly? Are they entrance exams to go into university in the States? Because, if so, I don't think Canada (atleast Ontario) has those.

The Advanced Placement (AP) exams allow students to basically take college-level classes and give them a chance to earn college credit while they are in high school.

However, to pass (earn college credit), you must earn at least a 3. Here's the grading scale and its "definitions":

1: Not qualified
2: Possibly qualified
3: Qualified
4: Well Qualified
5: Extremely well qualified

In a general sense, most middle-tier colleges will grant you credit for a 3 (selective colleges will basically ignore it), but the general recommendation is to earn at least a 4 or 5 to maximize the amount of credit hours you can earn (and show to your teachers and colleges that you really know your material in the corresponding subjects you took).

Every institiution sets its own policy on how much they can give in terms of credit hours. Some just let you skip the corresponding general education course entirely (provided you earned a 3, 4, or 5), while some (mostly the excellent schools) simply only grant you credit for a lower-level class and allow you to take advanced courses. (However, if you are going for a specific major, this may not apply entirely because you may have to retake the course that you had already taken via an corresponding AP course, or not allowed to skip out of the course entirey).

And yes, through AP exams, provided you have taken enough AP courses (and pass them), you can actually start as a sophomore at uni. But of course, that can only be pulled off at middle-tier schools (very selective schools don't do this).

The college entrance exams you were referring to is the SAT I and the SAT II (Subject Test) exams; they are administered by the same company that also adnimisters the AP exams (College Board/Educational Testing Service). The competitor to the SAT I exams is the ACT exams, which is also a college entrance exam. In truth, you could either go SAT I or ACT for your college entrance exam needs.

Don't forget the ACT. Almost every college will accept the ACT.

I'm pretty sure the score distribution comes out later. I checked the AP website, but they don't seem to have 2010 yet.

Got 5 on both AP European History and AP Computer Science A. Feelin' good.

And about not getting stuff in the mail; my sister and I are twins, and we both took the AP test at the same place same date. Her scores came in the mail later than mine did though, so I'd say don't worry about getting your scores later than others.

I got a 5 on my APUSH test. I screamed, ran across my house, and broke both of my legs when I jumped on my bed. I think they hit the side, or something.
