As the way it is written, without brackets, the result is -16, because according to the PEMDAS rule, you start with the exponent 4^2 and then multiply by -1.
Remember that -4^2 = -(4^2) = -1(4^2) =/= (-4)^2

Without any brackets, -16. You're doing -1 * 4 * 4.
If it were (-4)^2, then it would be 16 because it's -4 * -4.

Mudkip Wrote:-4 x -4 = 16 The TS never put brackets around the -4, therefore it's not negative 4. -4^2 = (-1)(4^2) = (-1)(16) = -16 (-4)^2 = (-4)(-4) = 16 The way is it writte (WITHOUT ANY BRACKETS), makes the result to be negative 16, if there are brackets like this (-4) then the result is 16 but this is not the case. |
