Is it possible to do the interview over just a regular IM? I have problems with phones (I can't hear very well with phones for some reasons) and I don't have a headset for Skype.

It's possible, yes. I like to accommodate my informants as much as possible. However, those kinds of interviews take much longer, though.

I will be sharing it with my informants, yes. As to whether I can share it freely on the interweb, I'm not sure. My thesis will be published by my university and consequently, I will probably have to give up some rights re: distribution.

However, keeping in mind that this is a project I'm undertaking as part of my master's program, this is, foremost, an academic paper. As such, I wouldn't expect it to be 'casual reading' lol

Not exactly. Generally put, anthropology emphasizes culture in shaping human identity, whereas psychology sides more with biochemical explanations based on medical understandings of the brain and its functions. As such, as an anthropologist 'in training,' I'm interested in the cultures that develop in MMOs, rather than the psychology of why people are attracted to these games, etc. I hope that made some sense =)

My friend is a freshman in Psychology major and she's learning those biological facts about human brain all over again. Drawing the noron cells she's been drawing since grade 9, haha.
Anthropology seems interesting when you can use your learning to investigate Maple's community. I've always given it a thought but never from a scientific point of view.

Your thesis has my participation, should you wish it. I'll be sending an e-mail shortly. I would prefer the interview be conducted over MSN, AIM, e-mail or Profil3, as I don't have Skype or for that matter know what it is. I'll try to be somewhat less harsh and critical of the community in the interview than I usually am, while still maintaining the philosophy I posted on your Profil3. I've actually been doing a bit of informal study of MS culture myself since joining, and comparing many of the entities (players, aspects of the community, forums, etc.) to real-world historical equivalents.

I'm rather interested in seeing the final result. In most U.S. colleges, a Master's thesis generally doesn't pass 25-30 pages, and 150 is generally reserved for a Ph.D. I was granted the opportunity to skip writing a thesis in exchange for doing the statistical data analysis for a local elementary school's state assessment results and making recommendations on which areas to improve/techniques to use. I opted to take that opportunity. I didn't mind writing (in fact, my thesis was 17 pages through as of fall semester), but I had a crapload of writing this semester in my other courses, mostly in the form of 20 to 40 slide Powerpoints and 20 to 30 page unit plans. I'm just glad the semester's over and I still have my 4.0.

By the way, you don't mind if I cite you in the credits to the two all-jobs videos as being bloody awesome and advertise your thesis in them, do you?

haha So you want to use the thesis as a platform for your own videos, eh? =P Actually, I'm coming up with a whole unique set of questions for you, mister! And I'll definitely be wanting to incorporate your data. Beats having to crunch all those numbers myself - let alone whether I'd have the patience to do it all! haha

I'll cut the off-topic talk after this post, but I figured I'd describe the MA/MS over here a little for a comparison purely of interest. I'm actually working on education, not anthro (the only anthro course I've ever taken was one on primate behavior at Stony Brook) and my undergrad was in actuarial math and statistics. Additionally, in my case at least, we need between 36 and 45 credits to get a Master's in education (which is the only program I can speak for), which also grants NY certification once we're past anti-drug and sexual abuse workshops, fingerprinting, and three exams (on two of which I've already scored nearly perfect, 291/300). For my program I need 36, and it certifies me to teach 7th-12th grades, plus an extension for 5th and 6th, with a specialty in math, reading, and inclusion classrooms.

The thesis paper or project is included as six of those credits and we take classes associated with them. Other than mine the ones in my class were generally not anything extremely involved or original like yours is (those are usually PhD projects here). Most were more like surveying students or teachers to either find their attitudes about something or correlating two to five outside factors with grades. A standard graduate semester (at least where I go) is 9 credits per semester, so it's 4 to 5 semesters, but some schools have programs that let you get certain bachelor's plus master's degrees in 5 years. I take 12 per semester because I wanted to finish it in 3, but I just found out a few weeks ago that apparently they won't let me attempt full and part time student teaching at the same time.

Wow that's an amazing topic for a Masters project!! *jealous* if only my research were so fun hah. I will only enter if I do not have to disclose my name...will that be alright?
