Where Do You Want To Go To College?

Or where did you want to go to college if you're already in college. :3

Well, this is the basic question asked to me by everyone that I know, mainly my parents, my parent's friends, my friend's parents, and my grandparents (so they know how much they have to pay for tuition, lolz) Anyway, I thought it would be cool to see if any of you guys were already thinking of what colleges or universities you wanted to go to. Also, post why you wanna go there whether it's for the course programs, sports, whatever. Most of the schools I wanna go to are pretty competitive also which sucks for me. :[

I'LL START KK.

My top six or seven choices for colleges/universities are as follows:

Columbia University (Ivy League, whoo!): NEW YORK CITY BABY. :D! Basically same as above minus the cousins/grandparents part, but my sister lives in Manhattan so I can visit her whenever. :D

Virginia Tech (HOKIES, OYE): Campus is lovely and I have a lot of friends that go to school there. VA Tech swimming is decent so I'd fit right in if I decide to swim in college. (Apparently ChemE Majors QQ every night because of the amount of work they have to do. D:)

Carnegie Mellon University: It's a really nice campus, and I'd pretty much be able to swim there and be very competitive which is a plus. ChemE once again. so yeah.

NYU (MOAR NEW YORK CITYYYYY): This is actually where my sister went to college, although she went to NYU Stern College of Business (she's an accountant making 150k/yr. DO WANT) Once again, I'd be able to visit her or possibly let me live with her so I don't have to pay for boarding. :D

Culinary Institute of America (om nom nom): Becoming a chef and opening a 5 star restaurant is my dream, but I also love Chemistry, so if I somehow can't get into any of my top schools, this is what I'll probably fall back onto. I'm leaning towards the campus in New York just because it's closer (doesn't like long flights [California Campus], but I'll probably be driving if I go to the New York Campus.. crap)

Penn State: University Park Campus (yay 37,000 student population): Penn State has a decent ChemE program and their swimming team is amazing. Maybe if I train hard enough this year I'll make the times I need for PSU, but for now, this stays at the bottom of my top 7 schools.

University of Pittsburgh: They have a nice swimming program, so if I drop some more time next year in the 200 and 500 I'll probably fit right in. I was interested in their Center for Simulating and Modeling. It looks pretty awesome. :D

So, how about you? Doesn't matter if you're already in college, a Sophomore, Freshman, or not even in high school yet. Just choose what schools you like(d) and say why you want(ed) to go there! :D

San Jose State University:
It is close by and easy to get into. Curse my lack of ambition.

I've always wanted to study in Sydney, and their Conservatorium or Music is apparently damn good.

New York University.
Next to Sydney, I would want to study in New York the most. I've always wanted to play in the orchestras on Broadway, and if I studied there I could do that at the same time.

Not as good as University of Sydney, but it's still in Sydney.

this made me very happy! I've lived in blacksburg just about all my life, and I've always lived just about a mile away from campus. it really is beautiful, and if you do go to virginia tech you will not regret it. I could never imagine living anywhere else.

I'm just about 22 so I can't really say anything like "after high school I hope to go to x college", but when I do go back to school someday, the only place I would ever consider is virginia tech. I plan to eventually study accounting.. ~_~ I'm boring.

Yeah, Virginia Tech is up there. I'm gonna visit sometime this summer and have my friends show me around. Gotta love having connections! It just sucks that most of the school I wanna go to are D1 schools which are uber competitive. I'll gotta like train extremely hard if I wanna even have a chance of swimming there. Which is why NYU is up there too, D3 school. :3

MIT (lol, won't be able to get in): They have a really nice swimming program as well as programs for Chemical Engineering (ORGANIC CHEM IS MY BABY <3 [for now? :x]). Plus it's really close to my cousins and grandparents whom I like never get to see.

M.I.T - Rejected (Good luck getting into here. Seriously. You better have cured AIDS while being a virtuouso at 3 different instruments if you want to make an impression on them.) Liked the idea of only Pass or Fail the first year, mostly because I'd like to explore other areas of science. Campus is smack in the middle of Cambridge though, and it doesnt really feel nice.

Cal Tech - Rejected (See above, except you must masturbate to math and/or science on a daily basis.) Similar to above, except for their oversummer research programs. Funded research as a student would be win. Horrible campus though, felt smaller than my High School. Also, only bachelor's degree offered is the one for science, and I'd like to know more people than that.

UCF (University of Central Florida) - Accepted (No surprise) Decent Uni near my house, I already get all my tuition paid for so would be a backup school. Way too many students. Also makes it feel like my 4 years of IB have been a waste.

UF (University of Florida) - Accepted (No surprise) Simlar to above, but majority of friends are going here. Decent school, although it sucks for the field I wanna go into, Computer Science. Huge student population is a turnoff.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute - Accepted (25k scholarship a year, woo.) Nice school in Troy, NY. Good program for Comp Sci and for Videogames.

Cornell - ??? (March 31st can't come sooner) Love the campus. Very nice overall feel to the community of the college. Great for Computer Science on the east coast. Only Ivy League to offer a minor in Game Design. Part of the Game Design Inititave, cooperation with big game companies, EA (ew) and others.

Stanford - ??? (See above) - Insane financial aid. Probably one of the best schools for Computer Science in the country. Near relatives. Beautiful campus.

Carnegie Mellon - ??? (Dont even know when I'm supposed to hear from them) - Computer Science mostly. Nice school, though the only one I didnt get to visit.

there is just one uni i wanted to go to, the only one in my city, and i got in six years ago.

For most people, you need to have multiple schools you wish to go to because your top ones are probably everyone else's top ones, so it's quite hard to get selected into them.

When schools are quite popular, they have a plethura of people to choose from, and they'll pick the most well-rounded individuals that apply. The schools are basically putting us on the chopping block when we apply comparing and contrasting every individual.

I go to Georgia Tech. I also applied to NC State University and CalTech. I didn't get into CalTech.

but in the scheme of things, does college matter that much? i mean yes it will give you a tertiary qualification that will boost your first job pay. some jobs require a tertiary qualification because of the nature of the job. but three years after the novelty of your new career wears off, it doesn't matter what college you went to, it's all experience and "the rest" of life. (right? or is it different in america and do people still compare what college you went to long after you graduate?)

It's mostly about the quality of education you are recieving. The higher the quality of education, the more prepared you will be once you enter the workforce in the career you studied for or something else. Or even graduate schools to further your education.

Umm, yes, college does matter, at least for the science and engineering disciplines. A chemical engineer had better know chemistry. While it may be possible to learn the necessary skills and knowledge without college, a degree is a reasonable assurance that you are at least minimally qualified. Which college doesn't matter so much to employers, but it determines the quality of your education and what kind of experience you get while there (which do matter to employers), as well as the social environment you'll have for 4 years (places like MIT and Cal Tech are vastly different from a state university).

The only person from my county to have gone to MIT in the past 5 years was hispanic and was like a state-champ swimmer or something. Seriously, if you're a white male, you're screwed (I got rejected from there too xD). My brother knew a white guy that got in, but my brother's like 28 now, so that was 10 years ago. He said the valedictorian of his class got in, but the guy got a 1600 on the SAT.

I really took a huge risk in applying to colleges. I only applied to MIT, Oxford-Emory, Emory, and Georgia Tech. Got denied by MIT in December, haven't heard from Oxford-Emory or Emory yet (I don't really care though..40k a year is disgusting. The only school worth that much to me would have been MIT), and GA Tech accepted me, so I'll be going there xP
