I feel like making a forum to experiment around with it, and well what is the best free base?

I think it was called invisionboards.. Make sure you make me an admin in your test forum!

invision isn't free.. it just has an 8-hour free demo and ad-based forum hosting.

simple machines forums is the best free one that I know of.

Yeah, forums take a while to setup.. But it's fun to mess around with ranks and stuff.

phpbb3 is my favorite, SMF isn't bad though. And you're going to need a MySQL database and the PHP extension installed in your favorite web server (apache, abyss, Microsoft IIS).

I don't know how Version 3 is, but I know Version 2 was known to have security issues, quite a bit.

MyBB is my favorite. It feels a lot like vBulletin (some people have made skins that look exactly like vB), but is open source (aka free).

phpBB2's security issues caused hosts to completely ban it from being used on their servers. I have no idea how phpBB3's security is, as I've never really used it (outside of playing from a few SVN checkouts WAAAAAAAY before it came out).
