Other than your descriptions of what happens when it fails It looks like I have the exact same problem. The only difference is when I fail to log on there is no indication that I am connected, nothing partial anyways. I can walk around normal but if I see people there all walking in place or not moving. I can't go though portals, chat, use my mount, or attack. Few times i've seen some chat it was never close to enough time to attempt a trade with someone.
Edit: Hedi, I'm able to log on a friends lvl 51 Hunter and another friends lvl75Mage with nor problems.
Do the characters you can't log on have NX? Both characters I can't log on have NX stuff.
