I was doing it wrong when I first started playing too. It was hard to learn how to do the Skyward Strike for me. After using it non-stop since for cutting grass (SINGLE BEST TOOL FOR CUTTING GRASS), I can safely say you're doing it wrong. It takes some getting used to, but you practically have to keep your hand steady with the thing pointed straight upwards.
I can do it without fail 90% of the time - 10% is when I fail to keep my hand still.
Too bad I wasn't doing it wrong. I'm going to just bring my counter point back up, the recalibrating feature, both the pointer and the one when you set it down, would not be so simple and easy if not for the fact Nintendo knew that these problems we're going to be common place. Not to mention, Wii Motion is not a perfect technology by any means. I'm going to agree with Sarah on every point in her previous post.
