Even so, a key difference is steam already has a safeguard in place to prevent your steam account being hijacked. Namely, steam guard. So even if they got your account information, they're not getting in without getting your e-mail details too, and if your password for that is the same as accounts you use with, thats at least partly your fault.
As for the credit card info, unlike sony, they announced that they do have some encryption on the passwords, sony didn't confirm or deny how safely stored the information is, sony probably did have a set of protection on the accounts, but it'd be nice to be told so. And steam isn't offline.
That being said, it is extremely annoying every time some douchebag decides to steal the information from some trusted online service, I think i'm still gonna have to cancel my card, but thats still a huge pain in the ass.
