This isn't surprising, because religion strongly ties into politics, at least in America.
When you're voting for someone you of course want to feel like they share some of your opinions/beliefs because if they do then it makes it easier to support them. If they don't share the same beliefs as you, why would you vote for them? And in almost all cases, you won't.
