We are talking about how religion presents itself and its own God. Whether any of it happened at all is immaterial.
What is important is that the holy book you're supposed to learn morality from presents God, that is supposed to be perfectly good and moral, as a vindictive, murderous sadist, both directly (the Plagues) and indirectly (ordering the Israelites to kill every last man, woman, and child of certain enemy tribes or towns).

Huh? Half of them are about loyalty to God, and the rest are trivial ("thou shalt not kill". Really? Damn!). The only progressive one is the day of rest, mostly because it includes slaves and farm animals.
