Americans don't want an atheist president

Religion is imbedded in much the United States pretty deeply, where people actually believe it over science and modern thought. We really live in a confused sad world. Also, I'm not saying that people have to believe in science, as everyone should have a choice of what they want to believe, but they should still be open to new ideas and should evaluate them themselves, rather than just taking the stance of "my religion is the answer, you are full of shi't."

Well, yeah, I agree with that. People just can't accept that they are wrong on anything; they refuse to even research the opposing viewpoint because they feel that that somehow undercuts or even invalidates their faith in whatever it is they believe. If they really believed it so strongly they would be willing to test that against the opposing view.

And if they were smart, they would be willing to change their view accordingly and become an actual individual with an individual outlook on life, not a rank and file member of a generic "group".
