Devil Wrote:Buccaneers were actually pirates who attacked the Spanish Armada, not Spanish pirates!
A little pirate history:
- Corsair (French origin) > Lettre de Course > Letter from the French king to chase merchant ships.
-- Corsairs operated mainly in the Mediterranean Sea
- Buccaneer (Caribbean native origin) > Buccan > Boucan (French) > Tool to smoke meat on.
-- Boucaniers (French) / Boekaniers (Dutch) / Buccaneers (English) operated mainly in the Caribbean.
So now we all know what the names mean!
Both Corsairs and Buccaneers were real "groups" of pirates, Nexon did a good job on renaming them!
Must've skimmed the dictionary.com page. I read "spanish" and "pirates" so buccaneers -> spanish pirates! xD
