Also, a witness mind could possibly mistake a face, pointing to another person. It's too soon to tell if what we can see it's the mind recreation, or the actual event.
There isn't enough information about this to know whether or not images are taken from controlled areas of the brain set by the "extractors", but i think it's pretty accurate to assume that since there are experts on the human brain working on this, and memory and imagination are two different parts of the brain, they would be able to figure it out.
