As someone who developed for years on monochrome text-only terminals, and moved to graphic workstations only to fill up the screen with terminal windows (what Windows calls "cmd"), I have to tell you Windows was "noobified" from day 1. (And of course was copied from the original Macintosh, which was designed to make computers accessible to laymen, so yeah, noobs ft$).
Making an (optional, right?) interface that is similar to handheld devices, so people can interact the same with all their gadgets, isn't that horrible of an idea. However, obviously, working at a desk and keeping your arm raised to the screen is not exactly comfortable. We'll see how this plays out.
But I can't really see how you can turn this win8 candy store into a high-tech terminal... :/
Anyway my prediction:
- Microsoft will launch this as "The new big thing since Windows 95".
- Lots of (noob) people will buy this "because it's pretty and it looks like their phone".
- After a few months people and businesses will start complaining because it's unworkable and counterproductive.
- Microsoft implements an option to get rid of the new UI totally -OR- there will come a tool that will allow you to De-noobify Windows again.
- If not, this will become their Windows Vista 2.0 all over again...
P.S. I also sense a golden opportunity for Lunix GUI, Chrome OS, MacOS, etc to take over Microsoft's dominating position on the desktop market. Especially in business environments.
