Hypothetically, he could have been sealed elsewhere when dark mage went boom, like spellbinding circle in Yugioh. He's probably in the bermuda triangle now in the middle of the sea as a ghost of his former self, doomed to live forever because he cursed himself to never die until the black mage is finally destroyed. You happen to be some ship wrecked adventurer traveling the maple seas and become his apprentice and you inherit the spirit of vengeance from Testonen.

Plus there's no confirmation of a death per se; it could be rumor. Would very much like to have a bare hand character too (maybe make them have specific gloves that have more slots and base watk (and or modify the formula, which would be awesome cause then buccaneers could use bare hand and do awesome damage instead of the crappy 60s and 50s now >:C))

Either of those could be plausible. I agree with either general outline (though some of the specifics are out there).
He could easily be (a) sealed or (b) dead and able to instruct a successor.
The only thing I find unlikely would be actually controlling him.

The gloves thing is actually a pretty good idea. I hadn't considered that before!
Wouldn't technically be "bare hands", but it would still be weapon-less.
