It's also strongly implied from when you first show present Neinheart a Dream Fragment:
"Yes, here we are. One of our informants gave me a report on this matter. It's related to a follower of the Black Mage with the power to create dream worlds. I hadn't verified it yet... Where did you find this Dream Fragment?"
As for the Maplestory 2 aside, I'm in the camp that believes Maplestory 2 will have little to nothing to do with the original Maplestory. To continue after any specific plot point in the original would mean that the original, obviously, could not continue past that point.
If the original couldn't continue, then, plot-wise, it dies. That's a bad situation for an MMO to be in.
