I had the same problem and same reaction in Tespia. I could only get 10-15 ores in 10 minutes even alone in the tutorial map.
Then I realized, you aren't supposed to hold the key down, just stand near the vein and press the key once.
Also if you have significant lag it won't work. The pick will swing a couple times then nothing. You need 5 swings or no ore.
