It's more related to self-esteem tho, while in the mirror, you can manage the way you look, you can get your better angle, and be more relaxed since you know what you'll look alike. While in a picture, although you know how you should be, you aren't relaxed enough to look natural, as you would in the mirror. A solution for better pictures is take them in the mirror. :O
Still, everyone looks much better outside a picture.
