I Think of it from like FF1
Black Magic = Fire/Ice/Lit
White Magic = Holy/Heal
Red mage, aka Paladin, attacks with a sword or whatnot, but is weaker than pure warriors, aka Hero.
Final Fantasy classifications aside, how about the magic of light (Paladins) verses the dark magic (Dark Knights). A "rebel"... too cool for either side and isn't a Hero.
