I'd rather see a Maple Story 2 succeed, being a successor built with all the mistakes of the original (AND FFFFING SECURITY HOLES.) in mind.
As far as the theory goes, its doesn't make sense because of 2 things.
1: Maple Story itself has gone through several major revamps to match its more contemporary competition.
2: Why let a profitable asset die if it still carries potential.
We've had, and are still having major updates to the game. Maple Story will continue to have players who even with the existence of MS 2 will want to finish what they have started here for a long time. Nexon has already invested an admirable amount of money into the game too so if it can still continue to generate money, then it makes sense to let it do so instead of pulling the plug, even if it is much less than it does now.
But doomsday theories aside, I think the true reason we're getting permanent stuff is because in a way, items such as gachapon and miracle cubes 'paid' for it. and keep in mind players are going to hop alternate characters a lot more since its easier to level them. They're not losing as much as people think, at the same time, things like this make the game more appealing and accessible.
