If you look back into US history by about a century, we began the 20th century weak and in isolation, came out of that isolation to claim a prominent role through World War I, suffered the Great Depression, (which along with WWI caused WWII,) came OUT of the Great Depression directly because of WWII, and then became one of the top dogs on the international scene in the aftermath of WWII in our Cold War fight against Russia.
So, World War II, not the New Deal, was directly responsible both for our finished recovery from the Great Depression. Maybe it had something to do with the whole country getting jobs making weapons, etc. where before there were no jobs at all. War is not bad for business, it just depends on the circumstances.
I just don't want George Bush dictating how we will "recover" from this one. The guy has basically made all his buddy buddies rich at the country's expense, which is how I know he is not stupid -- an idiot could not pull all this pomegranate, get everything he wanted and get away with it. It has yet to be seen whether McCain/Obama will do something useful or grind the country even more into dirt, but Bush should not be the one to tell us how to recover from what he caused.
