I'm sure MvC3s actual gameplay will leave the previous instalment in the stoneage dust, but the game will really loose out in the end unless the DLC is massive and not overpriced. As a big time fan of MvC2, I know I am very bothered by the tiny rooster. I'm also furious about the lack of Venom, but I shall admit that it is more of a personal problem than a flaw in the game.
To be fair, there were a lot of characters I never even really bothered to touch in MvC2. And lol 2 Wolverines.
Smaller rooster = easier to balance and more actual work being done on each individual character. MvC2 was full of recycling resources to put out fanservice. It gained popularity simply because of how chaotic and full of fan favorites the game was, as well as the overall hyper fanbase. The game itself was horribly unbalanced, but fun to play simply because of how chaotic everything was.
Rather than scraping up scraps of other games for a cool concept, Capcom actually created MvC3 with a serious fighter in mind, giving it as big of a budget as Super Street Fighter IV and expecting to outsell it. At the same time, they want to keep what made MvC2 fun, and it looks to me like they really kept that.
I don't mind having less characters if it means more of them will actually be playable against most other characters. And I don't mind having less characters if it means every character will have serious work put into creating them, rather than just throwing their sprite in from an old game and porting their moveset.
Capcom plans to have a lot of DLC in this game, they made the game with DLC in mind. It may not all be characters, but I'm sure we'll get a decent amount of new faces to the current rooster as time passes. We don't have a Spiderman villian in the game yet, and that's actually kind of odd considering how iconic a lot of them are within the Marvel universe. Venom has a pretty nice number of votes on official DLC polls, so he may be considered at some point, it'd just be up to the devs (and whether or not Marvel approves) to make him. Just hope if they do make him they use Eddie Brock as Venom.
