I don't know enough about the damage, so I won't argue with you on that point, but it's a huge overstatement to say that it doesn't cost any moving time.
Any time you spend jumping around holding down the Grenade button is time that you aren't recoiling. Even if Grenade has a larger range than any other attack, I'm pretty sure you'd be better served by recoiling over, mounting ship, and firing <x> attack.
