The animal instinct, if I remember correctly, is to have the children fathered by the tough macho pimento, and raised by the nicer man. Since we don't live in caves anymore, it doesn't quite work like that.
In my experience, they want excitement. An pimento acts in ways unpredictable to the girl, which makes her want him. A nicer guy acts in ways predictable, and resultantly she may not want him.
However, when the girls start settling down, they (typically) want the nicer man, except if they're idiots. Past a certain point a girl gets sick of random hook-ups in bars and whatnot; and not all of them want a wifebeater to marry and raise their children.
