It only has a cooldown when the ship breaks, which is like once at a long boss fight, and you take less damage post-BB, so it doesn't really matter. I didn't max Ship until 15x, and that was before they buffed the durability by more than 50%. The real reason to max Ship is for the Weapon Attack boost.
