Statistics says you are wrong. A group of 3000 or so random individuals can generalize the USA fairly accurately. (95% Confidence Interval?)
A quick Google Search found this neat table. Mostly Christian, a growing number of people who don't affiliate themselves with religion but aren't Atheist, and a rather small group of people who practice other religions like Islam.
Where did you get the idea that Christians weren't a huge majority in the USA?
