Put it this way..:
Imagine your significant other, the love of your life, lying in a hospital bed, sick, with some sort of uncurable disease. Due to their condition, pain meds also don't work as intended, therefore, they're in such a bad pain that they'd much rather die. Would you make them stay at the cost of their suffering just so you'll never loose them or would you kill the life support and grant their wish just so they wouldn't be in pain anymore?
The idea is that if you really love them, you won't stand in the way of what can possibly make them happier than you ever can.
I can honestly say that I've been in this situation as well. Not as the one who has to let go, but the one who wants to be let go. The problem was, after a couple months of constantly fighting at least twice a week, I just wasn't attracted to him anymore. But then, the more he held on, the more miserable I became and eventually, he finally saw that making me stay wouldn't make me love him.
My condolences to the ones who have had to give somebody up to make that person happy. <3
