Indeed, nyoros~

I didn't mention this before, but they took out Tsuruya's two catch phrases of "megas" and "nyoron", and for the better of the dub. They did that instead with a lisp, which is what the whole megas and nyoros stuff was all about, which sounded good and better than something really unnatural like that for me; but trying portraying her as energetic and a bit hyper made the voice actor try too hard for that effect, and it just felt really awkward and unnatural. With Japanese audio, I wouldn't have anything to relate it to, so that's no problem.

Now that you bring that up, anime/Japanese does a lot of use of onomatopoeia as catchphrases. Onomatopoeia is an effective device in literature but more effective in its native language. The sounds works better in Japanese when they speak because of it. English has onomatopoeia respective to English. It would be weird to hear something like "cluck cluck" in Japanese. I can't imagine Ayu from Kanon speaking English and suddenly blurt out "uguu~~" or Makoto whimpering "Auuu".

Also, tsundere doesn't turn out so well in English. I just listened to Kyou's clip in the original post. She sounds like she's going through menopause... or has a stick up her ass. Which is disappointing 'cause she's one of the more unique characters of Clannad.
