You think people have options with their churches? You do not chsoe your religion, it is chosen for you by birth for most people. They go their for most of their lives and are told its the truth by the people they love and trust the most.
Most people can't just wake up one day and say "hey this pomegranate is not real". You have to do a lot of soul searching and have some basic education and understanding about how the world really works.
"Because they want to, and by doing so they believe they won't go to hell or whatever."
You make it sound as if its fear and ignorance that makes them continue "believing" in the gods.
Did you know that the most religious states in the United States are also the most violent and the ones with the most death penalty?
