If I thought an open toilet seat looked stupid why would I leave it up?
Also, as a side note, when visiting houses if I find the lid down when I enter the bathroom I'll put it back down when I finish. I do it to be polite. If my hosts don't like to have the seat up, then I'll put it down for them. But that's less about being nice to the goils and more putting things where I found them. I hate being a burden. In my house, I leave the toilet the way I want to leave it.
