I don't use external hd's, though my father has a couple. I have own about ..25-30 Flash Drives though. Long story. Problem with Flash Drives is the fact that if someone walks by and accidentally 'touches' or hits your flash-drive, the data you're currently working on COULD get corrupted if the flash-drive is disconnected from the computer. This is one reason why I hate using Flash Drives at times..
Personally, I'd rather get a portable hard-drive (one around 100GB-500GB) to store files, music, movies, etc. There are ones that goes up to 1TB and they're around 100 dollars - 200 dollars, depending on the company / brand. MyBooks are usually cheap, though I'm not sure how reliable they are. I do know that Seagate is a really good brand for external HDs though, so look that sh't up, bro.
EDIT: I would also assume an external HD is more reliable than a Flash-Drive as well. I'm not too positive on this, so I'd also have to research on it. But all my life during high school and college, I have been using flash-drives, and for the most part, they ARE reliable. But I can't say 100% of the time.. if someone bumps onto my flash-drive accidentally while I'm typing something in Word or whatever, it gets f'cked up, and then I get mad.
