It looks pretty obvious to me that, if they made such a cute being like Pink Bean so powerful, they did it purposely, to make us understand that, if such a cute being is so powerful, then the Black Magician, who's a monstrous being, will probably be a lot more powerful than it. Which means an even more "almost-impossible-to-defeat" boss, the final one.

That's what I'm thinking the Black Magician will be. An even more epic fight against death. Hopefully my theories will be right.

I really doubt it. People play through a story to see the end. Beating the black magician means then end of the current story, and while it shouldn't be handed to you, it should be reasonable. This is a basic concept in almost every game ever created. There is no doubt that it will be a tough battle but it's very unlikely that it will be a near-impossible one.

On the other hand, optional bosses like Pink Bean are created primarily for challenge. They're meant to push you to your limits... but they're not necessary. You're not going to see or learn anything (or much) about maple from defeating the pink bean, so you don't lose anything by not beating it. If you do beat it, it's a title you can wear proudly.

Think Ruby/Emerald Weapons in Final Fantasy 7, or Ozma in Final Fantasy 9. There are many other optional bosses like this, but those are ones people will recognize and are a valid comparison. (Although since everything in console games is bound by limitations, a good strategy can allow anyone to beat them.)

So yeah. Black Magician = Sephiroth, Pink Bean = Weapon.
