I can verify this as well. I jumped into the cash shop as soon as the sale started. There were 70 meso magnet/item pouches. I remember, because I saw the "buy" option, but when I clicked it and was about to make my purchase they all immediately switched to "sold out".
I'm glad the 2x exp didn't sell out that fast. I'd rather miss out on pet equip sales than on the huge bargain 2x exp was set at.

On a serious note, I don't know how they assign their drops, but I'd assume assigning a certain drop to a wrong monster ID would cause this. Perhaps there was a certain boss that was supposed to drop coins that day, but didn't because of the ID mixup. Nobody noticed that boss wasn't dropping coins because all focus was directed to Newties.
