Is the Second Amendment necessary in today's society?

it was put in place for the people to be able to defend themselves against an oppressive government that is true, but that is not the only reason it was put in place. the founders realized that by default man is an inherently evil beast that will prey on others for its own benefit given the opportunity. the ability to defend oneself in such a situation can be the difference between someone leaving you alone and going on their merry way, you not getting hurt, or you winding up dead in an alley over the two dollars in your wallet the thief did not believe was all you had. the general consensus is that if the gun becomes necessary the situation has escalated out of control anyway and it is either irrelevant or among the only viable options.
