Have we disappointed our forefathers, America?

This is true, especially in light of the fact that many of these founding fathers were elitist (democracy was a dirty word in their days). However, what we do admire in them is their willingness to act against a heavy-handed government, something distinctly lacking in modern-day America.

You say "elitist" like its a bad thing.
Democracy and Republics are not the most efficient type of government, especially for a large nation.
Adding to that the inability of most Americans to give a damn really weakens the idea of democracy more.
We champion it, but ask an individual to name their mayor or governor or senate member or any person elected other than the president.
Hell I bet 25% of adult americans can't even list the vice president.
