One of my favourite set of book is the "Beginning <language>" from Wrox. The full title for the book is Ivor Horton's Beginning C++ : The Complete Language ANSI/ISO Compliant (Wrox Beginning Series) (Paperback). It got me through my uni days. I first picked up a Beginning Java from Wrox and I like it, so I continue with the series.
Once you advance, there's another book you should keep around, tho I forgot its name. I use it for references etc. Tho, nowaday, there's the Internet where you can search around.
