It can only be done with AP you gained from leveling up because the bonus MP you get from INT gear apply only then. Adding an AP into MP and trying to wash it back out will be like this: Add AP +12-14 MP; take back out AP-16 MP. You lose MP instead because the INT bonus won't kick in.
